Underwater Musings from a Jaded Jethro
I bring my camera when I jump in the ocean. Sometimes I'm fooling around. Other times I'm trying to get the best shot possible of some snail I've seen 100s of times. More often the former.
If you are an artist featured in one of my videos and want me to remove it I'll gladly do so. I don't monetize the videos (like who tf does) so if ya need something just shoot me an email, I'm an understanding guy.

Unknown Species of Shrimp - Microprosthema sp.
Taken around February 2024 in Nagahama Maizuru, Kyoto Japan. Underneath an oyster shell cluster in approximately 4 meters of water. It is likely Microprosthema sp. but the only ones recorded in Japan are found far more south in Okinawa and the Ryukyu's.
I hope to find some info on this species. Right now we are unsure exactly what it could be.
Its always fun finding new guys like this. If anyone might have an idea please let me know.

Thank you to everyone who helped and encouraged me to upload. I hope to upload more videos soon. the backlog of interesting stuff is immense, so i really don't have an excuse except grad school. Hope you enjoy this one. Abstract of paper: Acentrogobius virgatulus (Jordan & Snyder, 1901) is a small coastal species of goby found along the Western Pacific. It is commonly found in Maizuru bay along...

ハゼ/エビ (Goby-Shrimp) Symbiotic Relationship
Переглядів 137Рік тому
Some of the harder species to record in Maizuru. Itohikihaze イトヒキハゼ is a common species of goby found near the lab but is extremely skittish. They often dart back into their burrows when approached. These burrows are dug by the blind pistol shrimp that they protect forming a symbiotic relationship (Karplus&Thompson 2011). I really had to approach them slowly in order to get my camera close enou...
To those that have joined me on adventure

I want to take a quick minute (or minute 40) to thank all those who have joined me on my adventures over the years. I have been diving for 8 years now and it hasn't even felt close to that. I've gotten the pleasure of diving with so many amazing people over the years and have made lifelong friends doing what I love. Nothing really compares to it. So, thanks to all of you who have followed me in...
Pederson's Shrimp (Ancylomenes pedersoni) Cleaning Dance
Переглядів 149Рік тому
Sometimes there are unusual behaviors that you don't notice until you read about them. My friend Shoju Shi introduced a paper about this little shrimp, Pederson's Shrimp (Ancylomenes pedersoni) and the dances they do indicate to reef fish that they are willing to clean. This then pairs with the reef fish color changing to a darker tone to indicate to the shrimp it is ready to be cleaned. Back i...
Echizen Dives

Just a quick edit but I loved this one. Rough surf to get pass and a swell that was surging even at 20 meters. Still though, different than anywhere else I've been diving in Japan. There was a tropical species that made its way this far north to Japan that was interesting to see. Sorasuzumedai ソラスズメダイ is a vibrant blue/yellow species that drifts up from the tropics and settles while the water i...
Nagahama Dives

Just some pretty shots from my dives off of Nagahama in Maizuru. This is the area located right off of the lab so there are many experiments in the water. It can be murky at times but I think it just promotes a unique habitat not normally seen by vacation divers. Man do I have an insane amount of footage now. Still running into the perfection roadblock of not wanting to use stuff out of focus o...
Urchin Survey Dives - Tai and Obase in Maizuru

Recently I was asked to help out with some survey dives for a prominent company - Ocean Trading Co. We did many dives over two days (9 total dives) and I finally got to see some species that I have been searching for. Probably the most exciting was the Abalone (Awabi) and getting to dive on fabricated Abalone Artificial reefs. It really was a real treat and I hope to work with this company on m...
Golden Fireworm (Chloeia flava) consumes Injured Anchovy (Engraulis japonicus)
Переглядів 2,9 тис.2 роки тому
You never know what to expect underwater. I caught this interaction while on a routine dive survey off the lab in Maizuru. These worms are pretty ubiquitous and I normally see them roaming around the bottom. Today we had a shoal of anchovies come through and I noticed a few while on the dive. This one was probably injured from an encounter with another large animal and was stuck in the algae dy...

First of many dives in my new home for the next couple of years. Thanks for being patient and waiting for this video. Otomi - Fukui Prefecture- Japan This was my first time scuba diving in japan and I couldn't be happier. All new species to learn and a whole new language to learn them in. I may switch back to English common names in the future but for now I want to call them by by what they are...
Hopkin's Rose (Okenia rosacea) Nudibranch

A beautiful Hopkin's Rose Nudibranch (Okenia rosacea) shot near Pescadero California during the king tides. Simply a stunning little nudi, I was lucky to have had this little guy pointed out to me by other tidepoolers. I may not be an expert on nudibranchs but I included a few names of the different body parts you can see in this close up shot. Enjoy. Thank you Flamingosis for producing such am...

Love and miss you bud
By the look of its posture and unusual biological design, it looks like some sort of sea scorpion. But I might be wrong.
Quick update, the little guy is called a Microprosthema.
@@efeek77 Correct. That's the genus. However, the only ones in Japan are tropical species only found near Okinawa or Ryukyu islands. This one was recorded in temperate Sea of Japan during winter. Highly unusual.
Looks like a great place
Definitely a different environment than what I've known in Cali. Still some familiar faces.
Where did you see that amberjack?
Freediving Scripps pier in La Jolla. I think that was around October.

Gorgeous!
Nice work Hunter❤
awesome footage…
Great observations, Hunter!
What an incredible shot on the fish species. Their colorations are well blended in their environment.
Fun stuff. Apparently you are progressing well on your career trajectory. I assume the more patterned individual circling the combatants is a prospective female?
Amazing Truely fascinating that you managed to record this
such fantastic-looking fish, great video, well-done!
Cool video but I think you need a red filter on the camera to eliminate the overall green tone of the footage
Ahh back when I didn't know what I was doing and just took a gopro diving. Hard to believe it was six whole years ago. My more recent stuff is a bit better.
Looks a bit like a long, thin stone fish
Awesome footage! Sarcastic Fringeheads fascinate me so much. I suppose that they are searching for new house, perhaps shell. Who knows, maybe living in artificial hole is less comfortable for them. Both fishes are not interested in hunting at this time, they might came out to explore neighborhood. They met each other, despite being loners they don't fight. If they are male and female we may see their courtship on this video. When I'm looking at them carefully, l think they are both females. That is , they may be quiet along themselves, well fed females usually are more laid back.
Definitely not behavior I have seen before. There are many in this area near UCSB. My guess was some kind of courtship between male and female, since the one that often opened its mouth was slightly larger and wider head size. Hard to say with only this one recording. If something like this is observed a few more times with data regarding time, place, conditions, then a scientific paper could be written about it.
Thank you for explanation. It could be courtship. Indeed, all life aspects of those fish are worth observation and study. Your footage is unique and professionally done. If you can please do more videos. Sarcastic Fringeheads are known but not much info about them, at least in internet.
@@MaverickDivingThank you very much for article recommendations! It's hard to find any scientific or hobbyist deep look inside articles about Sarcastic Fringehead. I wonder why such interesting species is not well known....but perhaps it's better for them? Thank you again!
Excellent diving vids. Hope you keep putting them up.
Should be a new one out soon about newly discovered fish fighting.
It’s funny to see that in 10 seconds the kelp fish started to notice that you’re filming their squabbling.
Even funnier that they quickly go right back to squabbling after I set the camera and back away.
Wow! Epic footage of a species few are even aware of. Did you have a stakeout?
Total luck. I stake out species now for research projects, but this one just caught my eye at the right time.
Not even sure if it's full. It only took 3 seconds to finish swallowing and then acted like it hadn't eaten anything.
He eats that fish really quick, I thought it would take a while.
The last thing it sees is crawling death
Being swallowed alive has to be one of the worst ways to go.
how does it jus start moving again right after eating something the same size as it lol
New fear unlocked
Sea
insane it inhaled it
Strange fish.
💦🧞♀🐟🧞👏
can you spearfish there?
are u allowed to spearfish there?
Pretty sure its okay but I wouldn't eat anything from there. The rivermouth is right nearby and the harbor on the other side is insanely dirty. I do not recommend.
Cool
The surge at the break water is deadly and drowns people.
I disagree. Stay in the middle on the backside of the wall and there is little to no surge. The edges might get bumpy but not any more dangerous than a normal reef. I wouldnt freedive on the front end.
Such a cool fish!
My fav of your video songs ❤
Haha just dived there yesterday and it was amazing. I also have my own footage from my GoPro if you'd like to see it but messed up on my angle a bit as it was my 1st time testing it out.
What a great video-You ran across a nice array of species too!
Epic intro
Cute shot on the shrimp
great use of the map to zoom in and music.
Awesome footage! Would it be possible to use short clips from your dives on my video? I'll be sure to credit you.
Sure go ahead
I think that was a kelp bass (calico bass) not a brown rockfish
Why? It's not, it definitely is a rockfish. But why do you think its a calico?
@@MaverickDiving i thought that because the environment/structure looked like that would be more likely. I looked closer at the tail and color and you're right. Awesome video by the way👍 water looks really clear
Outstanding! Smooth cam work.
So chill
All of the shots are beautiful, especially the jellyfish and sea slug’s vibrant color.
Nice & chill, thanks for sharing
That a snake
nah it a worm
@@MaverickDiving ok I trust now
